By Steve Newton
I did the third of my eight interviews with guitar wizard Joe Satriani in August of 1997, when he had just finished up recording his seventh studio album, Crystal Planet.
At the time he was also performing with Steve Vai, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Robert Fripp as part of the 1997 G-3 North American Tour.
20-year-old Shepherd had taken over the spot on the tour previously held by tonemaster Eric Johnson, so at one point in the conversation I asked Satch if it was risky bringing a young guy like him into the fold.
