FRIDAY: late-night 40th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of the original Italian cut of director Dario Argento’s horror flick Phenomena, starring Jennifer Connelly as a young girl whose ability to communicate with insects might help solve a string of murders.

FRIDAY: Vancouver indie-pop quartet Peach Pit and American singer-songwriter Briston Maroney play Burnaby’s Deer Lake Park on their Long Hair, Long Life Tour, with guests Bnny.

Colin Mochrie performs at the Improv Centre

FRIDAY: Canadian standup and improvisational comedian Colin Mochrie, costar of TV’s Whose Line Is It Anyway?, performs two shows at the Improv Centre on Granville Island.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: music director Otto Tausk leads the Vancouver Symphony in a program that includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and the North American premiere of Danish composer Thomas Agerfeldt Olesen’s Violin Concerto at the Orpheum Theatre. Here’s my interview with Otto Tausk from 2021.

SATURDAY: School of Rock Vancouver presents local ska-rock quartet Jazzberry Ram at the Hollywood Theatre, with guests Luvinya and Cat Larceny.

The Lodger screens at the VIFF Centre

SATURDAY: screening at the VIFF Centre of director Alfred Hitchcock’s 1927 silent thriller The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog, presented with an original live score by Vancouver pianist and composer Chris Gestrin.

SUNDAY: the Vancouver Whitecaps take on the Seattle Sounders in Major League Soccer action at BC Place.
