Oldboy screens at the VIFF Centre

TUESDAY TO FRIDAY: the Arts Club Theatre Company presents performances at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage until August 3 of the musical comedy Waitress, about a small-town waitress and expert pie-maker who dreams of a new life outside of her tumultuous marriage.

WEDNESDAY: 30th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of director Larry Clark’s controversial, no-holds-barred indie film Kids, which chronicles a frenetic day-in-the-life of a group of contemporary teenagers in New York City.

WEDNESDAY: the Vancouver Whitecaps take on Winnipeg’s Valour FC in a 2025 Canadian Championship quarterfinal game at BC Place.

Cat Clyde plays the Pearl

WEDNESDAY: Ontario country-folk singer-songwriter Cat Clyde plays the Pearl, with guest Joe Abbott.

WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAYPlayland features midway games, mini-golf, a climbing wall, haunted mansion, food concessions, and over 35 rides and attractions, including the iconic wooden rollercoaster. Playland runs until August 15 on the PNE Grounds, then becomes part of admission to the PNE Fair.

THURSDAY: screening at VIFF Centre of Oldboy, director Park Chan-wook’s shocking 2003 revenge thriller about a man inexplicably held captive by unknown persons for 15 years, and then, just as inexplicably, released. In Korean with English subtitles.

Tom Morello plays the Commodore

THURSDAY AND FRIDAY: American guitarist and political activist Tom Morello, best known for his work with Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, plays the Commodore Ballroom. Here’s my interview with Tom Morello from 2011.

FRIDAY: Vancouver indie-rock band Dog Gone plays the WISE Hall, with guests the Zozzled Hepcats, Big Day, and Caught Feelings.

FRIDAY: the third annual Good Stank Stampede at Green Auto features performances by country-rock acts Skinny Dyck, Chase Coulee, and Johnny Wakeham.

54-40 plays Whistler Olympic Plaza

FRIDAY: Vancouver guitar-rock legends 54-40, featuring founding vocalist Neil Osborne, play a free show at the Whistler Olympic Plaza. Here’s my interview with Neil Osborne from 2000.
