Barbarella screens at the Rio

MONDAY: screening at VIFF Centre of Oldboy, director Park Chan-wook’s shocking 2003 revenge thriller about a man inexplicably held captive by unknown persons for 15 years, and then, just as inexplicably, released. In Korean with English subtitles.
TUESDAY: screening at the VIFF Centre of Norman Jewison’s Oscar-winning 1967 drama In the Heat of the Night, starring Sidney Poitier as a Philadelphia cop who becomes embroiled in a murder investigation in Mississippi.
TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY: multiplatinum Canadian R&B/pop vocalist Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, aka the Weeknd, plays BC Place, with guests Playboi Carti and Mike Dean.

Waitress runs at the Stanley
TUESDAY TO FRIDAY: the Arts Club Theatre Company presents performances at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage until August 3 of the musical comedy Waitress, about a small-town waitress and expert pie-maker who dreams of a new life outside of her tumultuous marriage.
WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: Playland features midway games, mini-golf, a climbing wall, haunted mansion, food concessions, and over 35 rides and attractions, including the iconic wooden rollercoaster. Playland runs until August 15 on the PNE Grounds, then becomes part of admission to the PNE Fair.
FRIDAY: all-star band Progject, formed by drummer Jonathan Mover and featuring former Frank Zappa and Joe Satriani guitarist Mike Kenneally, performs ’70s prog-rock tunes by Genesis, Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, and Rush at the Rickshaw Theatre, with guest Travis Larson.

The Zawose Queens play Folk Fest
FRIDAY: opening night of the 48th annual Vancouver Folk Music Festival, which features 40 artists from Vancouver and around the world, including Sue Foley, Krystle Dos Santos and Orchard Sky, Speeding West, Rich Hope, Shooglenifty, Blue Moon Marquee, Ruthie Foster, Kris Drever, the Heavy Heavy, and the Zawose Queens, through Sunday at Jericho Beach Park.
FRIDAY: late-night screening at the Rio Theatre of director Roger Vadim’s cheesy 1968 sci-fi sex romp Barbarella, starring Jane Fonda as a nubile astronaut tasked with stopping a mad scientist.
FRIDAY: the Vancouver Canadians take on the Spokane Indians in Minor League Baseball action at Nat Bailey Stadium.

FRIDAY: American indie-rock singer-songwriter Ben Kweller plays tunes from new album Cover the Mirrors at the Biltmore Cabaret, with guest RYMAN.
