Weapons opens in Vancouver theatres

FRIDAY: Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne tribute bands Sack Blabbath and Them Bones perform at a tribute to the late Prince of Darkness at the Hollywood Theatre. Here’s my interview with Ozzy Osbourne from 1982.

FRIDAY: Australian indie-rock quartet Surf Trash plays tunes from debut album The Only Place I Know at the Pearl.

FRIDAY: Barbarians writer-director Zach Cregger’s new horror flick Weapons, about 17 children from the same classroom who mysteriously run out of their homes in the middle of the night, opens at various Vancouver theatres.

Star Witnesses runs at Polygon Gallery

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Star Witnesses, running at the Polygon Gallery until September 28, assembles works by 11 artists whose observations of the cosmos bring new understandings of exploratory and migratory movements on Planet Earth.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Vancouver Canadians take on the Hillsboro Hops in Minor League Baseball action at Nat Bailey Stadium.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAYPlayland features midway games, mini-golf, a climbing wall, haunted mansion, food concessions, and over 35 rides and attractions, including the iconic wooden rollercoaster. Playland runs until August 15 on the PNE Grounds, then becomes part of admission to the PNE Fair.

Ani DiFranco plays Deer Lake Park

SATURDAY: the deceptively named Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival at Deer Lake Park offers little in the way of actual blues music, but it is a free event with outdoor performances by Antonio Larosa, Jackson Hollow, Judith Hill, Aysanabee, and headliner Ani DiFranco.

SATURDAY: Grateful Dead tribute band GD/BC honours the 30th anniversary of the passing of Jerry Garcia with two sets of Dead music at the Hollywood Theatre.

SUNDAY: American industrial-rock band Nine Inch Nails performs at Rogers Arena as part of its Peel It Back Tour 2025, with guests Boys Noize.

Jazz on a Summer’s Day screens at VIFF Centre

SUNDAY: To Louis With Love at the VIFF Centre features a performance by local jazz band the Bonnie Northgraves Quintet followed by a screening of Bert Stern’s 1959 jazz concert film Jazz on a Summer’s Day.
