Carrie screens at the Rio

MONDAY: screening at the Rio Theatre of director Brian DePalma’s 1976 adaptation of Stephen King’s bestselling supernatural-horror novel Carrie, hosted by Mike Flanagan, director of the Stephen King-based films Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, and the upcoming Vancouver-shot miniseries Carrie.
TUESDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the New York Rangers in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.
TUESDAY: screening at the Rio Theatre of writer-director James Gunn‘s Metro Vancouver-shot 2006 horror-comedy Slither, hosted by makeup-FX guru Todd Masters. Here’s my original 2006 review of Slither and my 2006 interview with James Gunn.

Rocky Horror at the Rio
TUESDAY TO FRIDAY: late-night 50th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of director Jim Sharman’s campy musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show, starring Tim Curry as mad scientist and sweet transvestite Dr. Frank N. Furter. Here’s my interview with Tim Curry from 1990.
WEDNESDAY: costumed gore-metal band Gwar plays the Vogue Theatre, with guests Helmet, the Dwarves, and Blood Vultures. Here’s my interview with former Gwar leader Dave Brockie from 1991 (R.I.P.).
WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: Fright Nights, which features eight haunted houses, wandering scare artists, over 15 midway rides, and spooky foods, runs until October 31 on select nights at the PNE Grounds (Hastings and Windermere).

Lech Walesa speaks at the Convention Centre
THURSDAY: Lech Walesa, the Nobel Peace Prize winner and trailblazing leader of Poland’s Solidarity movement, gives a lecture on the greatest challenges of our time at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
FRIDAY: the 13-hour Horror Movie Marathon at the Cinematheque features a curated grab bag of arthouse horror, with the lineup of films kept secret until they are shown. SOLD OUT.
FRIDAY: Vancouver Grateful Dead tribute band GD/BC plays a Halloween show at the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Buddy and the Scarecrow and Scott Smith.

Sal Ferreras performs at the Orpheum
