Carnal Knowledge screens at the Park

FRIDAY: Calm Like a Bomb presents its tribute to Rage Against the Machine at the Cobalt, with guests Anthem (Rush tribute), Big Brown Beaver (Primus tribute), and Mr. Stanley Acoustic (Kiss tribute).

FRIDAY: Italian psych-rock quartet New Candys plays the WISE Hall, with guests Revolution Above Disorder and Dour.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAYThat Green Ideal: Emily Carr and the Idea of Nature, running until November 8 at the Vancouver Art Gallery, features more than 100 works by the iconic B.C. artist, exploring in-depth her obsession with the landscape of the Pacific Northwest.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Vancouver Canadians take on the Everett AquaSox in Minor League Baseball action at Nat Bailey Stadium.

Frank Zappa songs at the Rio

SATURDAY: The Music of Frank Zappa and Pink Floyd at the Rio Theatre features performances by tribute bands Zappostrophe’ and Lunatics on the Grass.

SATURDAY: nine-piece Argentine fusion band La Mosca mixes ska, cumbia, merengue, salsa, and pop rock at the Pearl.

SUNDAY: Van Django–a local quartet composed of guitarist Budge Schachte, guitarist-cellist Finn Manniche, violinist Cameron Wilson, and bassist Brent Gubbels–performs gypsy jazz at Mel Lehan Hall at St. James.

SUNDAY: 55th anniversary screenings at the Park Theatre of the shot-in-Vancouver films Carnal Knowledge and McCabe & Mrs. Miller, hosted by local director Oz Perkins.

SUNDAY: screening at the Rio Theatre of a 40th anniversary restoration of director John Woo’s Hong Kong gangster epic, A Better Tomorrow.

Lou Reed songs at VIFF Centre

SUNDAY: in Street Hassle: Songs by Lou Reed, guitarist-composer Aram Bajakian–who played with Reed during his 2011 and 2012 tours–performs a selection of the legendary singer-songwriter’s tunes at VIFF Centre.
