Escape From New York screens at the Rio

FRIDAY: late-night screening at the Rio Theatre of a 4K restoration of director John Carpenter’s 1981 action-thriller Escape From New York, about a former Special Forces soldier-turned-convict who is offered his freedom if he rescues the president of the United States from the maximum security prison known as Manhattan.

FRIDAY: female-front tribute band from Amsterdam, Sack Blabbath, performs one full set of Ozzy Osbourne classics and one full set of Black Sabbath anthems at the Hollywood Theatre. Here’s my interview with Ozzy Osbourne from 1982.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAYThat Green Ideal: Emily Carr and the Idea of Nature, running until November 8 at the Vancouver Art Gallery, features more than 100 works by the iconic B.C. artist, exploring in-depth her obsession with the landscape of the Pacific Northwest.

Dark Side at the Dome

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: showing nightly until August 31 at the DomePink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon is an immersive, 42-minute, 360° surround-sound journey through deep space, alien worlds, and celestial landscapes, featuring music from the legendary prog-rock band’s 1973 album.

SATURDAY: the Vancouver Whitecaps take on FC Dallas in Major League Soccer action at BC Place.

SATURDAY: CatVideoFest 2026 at the Rio Theatre is a compilation of the latest and best cat videos, with proceeds to VOKRA, a volunteer-driven organization that rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes cats and kittens across the Lower Mainland.

The Roughriders are in town

SUNDAY: the BC Lions take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Canadian Football League action at BC Place.

SUNDAY: Montana indie-rock quartet Silkworm plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Nina Nastasia and Fines.

SUNDAY: Canadian rock legends the Guess Who, featuring vocalist Burton Cummings and guitarist Randy Bachman, play the Freedom Mobile Arch. Here’s my interview with Randy Bachman from 2001.

Angine de Poitrine plays the Pearl

SUNDAY: anonymous Canadian math-rock duo Angine de Poitrine performs the first of two nights at the Pearl in oversized papier-mâché masks and black-and-white polka-dotted costumes.
