A certain Chuck Berry tune comes to mind every Christmas in Newtville

By Steve Newton

Every year when I’m putting up the Christmas lights a certain Chuck Berry tune comes to mind.

Can you guess which one it is?

No, it’s not “Run Rudolph Run”.

“House of Blue Lights” was actually first recorded in 1946 by Ella Mae Morse and Freddie Slack. Did the groovy lingo from these cool cats way back when, Daddy-O:

I’ve always had a soft spot for George Thorogood’s boogiefied 1980 version as well:

Hey, it’s not too late to get that rickety ladder out again, take down whatever coloured lights you’ve carefully festooned your place with, and replace ’em with a better colour that instills that classic Chuck Berry vibe.

Do the blue!

[Verse 1]
Pull up your jeans and we will truck on down
A knocked out joint at the edge of town
A real homecoming for all you cats
You keep a walking ’til you see that welcome mat

[Chorus]
Fall in there, lose your lead
At the house, the house of blue lights

[Verse 2]
We have the time and we’ll cut a rug
And if you dig that jive like it should be dug
A real homecoming for all the cats
You keep a walking ’til you see that welcome mat

[Chorus]
Drop in there, get your lead
At the house, the house of blue lights

[Bridge]
Fryers, Broilers, Detroit Barbecued Ribs
You get the hit of the week
When you dig that real fine jive
With the welcome beat
