When I heard the sad news that original New York Dolls guitarist Syl Sylvain had died of cancer three days ago, it made me remember how much I adored the Dolls as a teenager in the seventies. It also got me thinking about any New York Dolls interviews I might have done over the years.
Checking out my stash of cassette tapes, I found one I did with Dolls singer David Johansen back in August of 2005.
That’s when Sylvain and Johansen, the only surviving members at the time, had reunited for a tour that brought them to the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver.
In advance of the show I’d called up Johansen in New York, and about 45 seconds into the conversation my three-year-old son can be heard barging into my office, throwing off my concentration by blabbering on and on about how much he loves me.
What I said to get rid of the pesky kid caused Johansen to comically warn me about the psychological fallout from bad parenting.
