FRIDAY: the Rogue Folk Club presents Italian folk-roots guitar virtuoso Beppe Gambetta at Mel Lehan Hall at St. James. That dude can play!

FRIDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena. The Canuckleheads beat the Avs last time, so don’t write them off.

Black Label Society plays the PNE Forum.

FRIDAY: American metal bands Anthrax and Black Label Society play the PNE Forum, with guests Exodus. It’s quite possible that all three bands will bring the noise.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Toronto’s Ronnie Burkett Theatre of Marionettes presents the world premiere of Little Willy, a twisted retelling of Romeo and Juliet, at the Cultch Historic Theatre.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival features music, theatre, dance, and multidisciplinary works by artists from across Canada and around the world at various Vancouver venues until February 5.

Art Battle unfolds at the Red Room

SATURDAY: 12 artists battle the clock and each other during three fast-paced rounds in Art Battle Vancouver at the Red Room Ultrabar, with all artwork available for auction.

SATURDAY: through readings, performance, and music, actor Melody Johnson and composer Allen Cole bring to life famed American author Shirley Jackson’s writings in Letters, Leftovers, and The Lottery at the ACT Arts Centre in Maple Ridge. Who doesn’t love Shirley Jackson?

SATURDAY: April O’Peel curates a Burlesque & Variety Show at the Rio Theatre featuring performances by Faye Havoc, Genesis, Gigi Lavande, Grace Galore, Justine Sane, Lilac Lust, Neil E Dee, the Neighbours, Savannah Rouge & Forrest Rump, Scarlet Delirium, and Vixen Von Flex.

SATURDAY: Timbre Concerts presents GD/BC, the Grateful Dead Tribute Band, for two sets at the Cobalt. Don’t be surprised if they do “Truckin'”.

TrailerHawk plays the Fox Cabaret

SATURDAY: local Americana rockers TrailerHawk and transplanted Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Connely Farr play an early show at the Fox Cabaret. That’s one heckuva roots-music double bill.
