Demons screens at the Rio

MONDAY: Los Angeles alt-metal band Tool, featuring vocalist Maynard James Keenan, plays Rogers Arena.
MONDAY: screening at the VIFF Centre of the new documentary Joan Baez: I Am a Noise, about the legendary American folk singer and political activist.
MONDAY: screening at the Rio Theatre of director Lamberto Bava’s 1985 Italian horror flick Demons, with live score performed by Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin.
TUESDAY: contemporary Irish folk band the Mary Wallopers plays the Hollywood Theatre, with guest Sam Shackleton. SOLD OUT. Snooze ya lose.
TUESDAY: screening at the Cinematheque of director David Lynch’s acclaimed 1980 drama The Elephant Man, starring John Hurt as the severely deformed Joseph “John” Merrick.
WEDNESDAY: Scott Smith’s Adventures in Pedal Steel returns to the Painted Ship for a celebration of the music of the 1950’s, featuring Scott Smith on pedal steel, Paul Pigat on guitar, Jeremy Holmes on bass, and Liam MacDonald on drums, with guest vocalists Laura Crema, Sinead Sanders, and Michael Brennan.

Cirque du Soleil presents Kooza
WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: Cirque du Soleil presents its production of Kooza, a 125-minute acrobatics/circus show exploring themes of fear, identity, recognition, and power. Running until December 31 under the Big Top at Concord Pacific Place.
WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: Fright Nights at the PNE is a Halloween-themed experience with haunted houses, rides, creepy décor, and live performances. Recommended for those 13 years and older.
THURSDAY: led by guitarist and composer Tony Wilson, The Homeless Project is a multimedia presentation at the Carnegie Community Centre Theatre that incorporates original music, film, and narration to shine a light on the housing struggles people face in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and across Canada. Free admission.
FRIDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the St. Louis Blues in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

Jack Skellington is at the Orpheum
FRIDAY: the Vancouver Symphony performs along to a screening of director Henry Selick’s stop-motion masterpiece The Nightmare Before Christmas at the Orpheum Theatre.
FRIDAY: Vancouver-based Grateful Dead tribute band GDBC plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Buddy and The Scarecrow!
FRIDAY: the Burnaby Halloween Festival presents In Praise of Nightmares, featuring screenings at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts of the seminal 1920s silent films Un Chien Andalou and Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, with live musical accompaniment.
FRIDAY: 50th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of director William Friedkin’s horror classic The Exorcist, starring Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, and Linda Blair. Here’s my interview with Max von Sydow from 1993.
