FRIDAY: the Toddcast Podcast presents the Blue Light Sessions featuring local hard-rock power trios La Chinga and Worse at Blue Light Studio.

FRIDAY: Vancouver blues singer-guitarist Steve Kozak performs with keyboardist Peter Van Deursen, bassist Trevor Newman, and drummer Darrell Mayes at Frankie’s Jazz.

FRIDAY: British synth-pop band from the ’80s, Depeche Mode, plays tunes from latest album Memento Mori at Rogers Arena.

FRIDAY: the Canadian comedy duo of Kenny Hotz and Spencer Rice performs on the Kenny Vs Spenny 20-year Anniversary Comedy Tour at the Pearl.

Dawn of the Dead screens at the Rio

FRIDAY: 45th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of George Romero’s zombie classic Dawn of the Dead, as part of the Rio Grind Film Festival.

FRIDAY: Vancouver electro-industrial band Skinny Puppy, featuring original members cEvin Key and Nivek Ogre, plays the Commodore Ballroom on its final tour.

FRIDAY: screening at the Vancouver Playhouse of the documentary 299 Queen Street West, which tells the story of television upstart MuchMusic from the perspective of the VJs.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: the two-day Hopscotch Festival features sample from over 250 different varieties of scotch and other whisky, tequila, rum, gin, vodka, cider, premium and craft beer, and wine at the PNE Forum.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: musical director Otto Tausk conducts the Vancouver Symphony and British cellist Steven Isserlis in a program that includes Elgar’s poignant Cello Concerto at the Orpheum Theatre.

Elf: the Musical runs at the Stanley

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Arts Club Theatre Company presents Elf: The Musical, based on the 2003 Christmas comedy film Elf and starring Andrew McNee as Buddy the Elf. Running until December 31 at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Emily Carr: A Room of Her Own at the Vancouver Art Gallery features approximately 25 works drawn from the gallery’s Emily Carr Collection and maps key biographical moments in Carr’s practice.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Theatre Replacement presents playwrights Jivesh Parasram and Christine Quintana’s family show East Van Panto: Beauty and the Beast, with music by Veda Hille, at the York Theatre.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Cirque du Soleil presents its production of Kooza, a 125-minute acrobatics/circus show exploring themes of fear, identity, recognition, and power. Running until December 31 under the Big Top at Concord Pacific Place.

Blood Wedding runs at Studio 58

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Carmen Aguirre directs performances of Blood Wedding, Federico García Lorca’s tragedy of love, repression, and duty, at Langara College’s Studio 58.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the annual Festival of Lights features 15 acres of trees, plants, and pathways adorned with over one-million twinkling lights at VanDusen Botanical Garden.

SATURDAY: Barney Bentall & the Cariboo Express perform at a fundraiser for the Potluck Cafe Society‘s DTES programs at the Vogue Theatre.

SATURDAY: Live Acts Canada presents the Best in Vancouver 2023 finals, featuring performances by Luvinya, Ever Age, and the Swill Merchants at the Fox Cabaret.

SATURDAY: Swedish prog-metal band Katatonia plays tunes from its latest album Sky Void of Stars at the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Gost and Tribunal.

BC/DC plays the Hollywood

SATURDAY: AC/DC tribute band BC/DC plays the Hollywood Theatre, performing songs from both the Bon Scott and Brian Johnson eras. Here’s my interview with Brian Johson (and Malcolm Young) from 1983.

SUNDAY: the twice-yearly Vancouver Vinyl Record Show at Heritage Hall features vendors selling LPs, 45s, CDs, posters, and music memorabilia.
