FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: guest conductor Gemma New leads the Vancouver Symphony and violinist Augustin Hadelich in a program featuring Gustav Holst’s The Planets at the Orpheum Theatre on Friday and Centennial Theatre on Saturday.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: True Tribal: Contemporary Expressions of Ancestral Tattoo Practices explores 30-plus years of Indigenous tattooing from around the world and showcases the artists who are reconnecting with traditional skin-marking practices, at the Museum of Vancouver.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: through videos, photographs, testimonies, song lyrics, and reflections, the exhibition Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot’s Russia offers an account of infamous feminist art collective Pussy Riot’s non-violent actions, running until June 2 at the Polygon Gallery.

Over the Ridge at Massey Theatre

SATURDAY: the world premiere of writer Brendan McLeod’s Over the Ridge at New Westminster’s Massey Theatre sees the story of the Battle of Vimy Ridge told through the folk-roots music of the Fugitives and contemporary ballet choreographed by Jacob Williams.

SATURDAY: the Vancouver Whitecaps take on the L.A. Galaxy in Major League Soccer action at BC Place.

SATURDAY: L.A. psych-rock quartet Meatbodies plays tunes from new album Flora Ocean Tiger Bloom at the Pearl, with guests Heavy Trip and Space Queen.

SUNDAY: 45th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of George A. Romero’s zombie epic Dawn of the Dead.

Danish String Quartet plays the Playhouse

SUNDAY: the Vancouver Recital Society presents the Danish String Quartet, with Finnish cellist Johannes Rostamo, in a program that includes Schubert’s String Quintet in C major, D. 956 at the Vancouver Playhouse.
