MONDAY: screening at the Rio Theatre of South Korean director Jae-hyun Jang‘s folkloric, occult thriller Exhuma, the highest grossing Korean film of 2024, so far.

MONDAY TO FRIDAY: True Tribal: Contemporary Expressions of Ancestral Tattoo Practices explores 30-plus years of Indigenous tattooing from around the world and showcases the artists who are reconnecting with traditional skin-marking practices, at the Museum of Vancouver.

TUESDAY: Atlanta guitar rockers the Black Crowes, featuring singer Chris Robinson and guitarist Rich Robinson, perform hits from the past and tunes from new album Happiness Bastards at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Here’s my interviews with Chris Robinson from 1990 and Rich Robinson from 1996.

TUESDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Calgary Flames in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

TUESDAY: the Vancouver Chopin Society presents pianist Yefim Bronfman in a recital of works by Chopin, Schubert, Schumann, and Salonen at the Orpheum Theatre.

WEDNESDAY: Adventures in Pedal Steel: 70’s Edition Part 2 at the Painted Ship features steel-infused tunes by David Bowie, Jeff Beck, and the Rolling Stones, with pedal-steel player Scott Smith and guest vocalists Rich Hope, Joe Rotundo, Ashley Grant, and Christopher Woudstra.

eXistenZ screens at the Rio

WEDNESDAY: as part of National Canadian Film Day, 25th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of director David Cronenberg’s sci-fi thriller eXistenZ, starring Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jude Law.

WEDNESDAY: Jokers Canada presents A Comedy Night at the Roxy,, featuring standup comedy by Ivan Decker, Sophia Johnson, Chris Griffin, Steev Letts, Aaron Arya, and Greta Lin at the Roxy Cabaret.

WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: through videos, photographs, testimonies, song lyrics, and reflections, the exhibition Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot’s Russia offers an account of infamous feminist art collective Pussy Riot’s non-violent actions, running until June 2 at the Polygon Gallery.

Steve Dawson plays Mel Lehan Hall

FRIDAY: roots band Steve Dawson & the Hooded Mergansersled by Canadian guitarist, songwriter, pedal steel player, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and engineer Dawson–plays Mel Lehan Hall at St. James.

FRIDAY: Canada’s most divisive hard-rock band, Nickelback, headlines day one of Coast City Country at BC Place. Here’s my interview with Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger from 2001.

FRIDAY: 11-piece Vancouver rhythm ‘n’ blues/funk/soul band the R&B Allstars performs at White Rock’s Blue Frog Studios as part of its Last Dance Tour.

FRIDAY: American punk-rock bands Strung Out and the Casualties coheadline the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests the Venomous Pinks.

FRIDAY: Brewhalla North Vancouver features sampling of craft beer, wine, cider, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages along with live music, games, and food at the Shipyards.

The Starling Effect plays Princeton Pub

FRIDAY: local indie-rock band the Starling Effect, featuring singer-guitarist John “Coolhand” Lucas, plays the Princeton Pub, with guests Hotel Empress and Pontiac.
