FRIDAY: the Rogue Folk Club presents Vancouver blues legend Jim Byrnes with gospel/R&B group the Sojourners at Mel Lehan Hall at St. James. SOLD OUT. Here’s my interview with Jim Byrnes from 1985.

FRIDAY: Comedy in the Forecast features standup comedy by Yumi Nagashima, Robert Peng, Nancy Ho, and host Arash Narchi at Forecast Coffee.

FRIDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Edmonton Oilers in round two of the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup Playoffs at Rogers Arena.

Graham Clark performs at the Rio

FRIDAY: the Rio Theatre‘s 15th Anniversary Party is a night of comedy, burlesque, and music featuring performances by Graham Clark, Charlie Demers, Paul Anthony, Jamie DeWolf, Duncan Shields, April O’ Peel, Cherry On Top, Clare Yoyeur, Shirley Gnome, East Van Opry’s Kathleen Nisbet, Jack Garton and Hank Pine, and surf band the Reviberators. True Tribal runs at the Museum of Vancouver

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: J.E.H. MacDonald? A Tangled Garden at the Vancouver Art Gallery until May 12 features 10 previously unknown painted sketches attributed to a founding member of the Group of Seven.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Vancouver Canadians take on the Everett Aquasox in Minor League Baseball action at Nat Bailey Stadium.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: through videos, photographs, testimonies, song lyrics, and reflections, the exhibition Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot’s Russia offers an account of infamous feminist art collective Pussy Riot’s non-violent actions, running until June 2 at the Polygon Gallery.

D.O.A. plays the Commodore

SATURDAY: Vancouver punk-rock legends D.O.A., featuring frontman Joey “Shithead” Keithley, play the Commodore Ballroom, with guests Dead Bob and WAIT//LESS. Here’s my review of D.O.A.’s “final” show from 1990.

SATURDAY: East L.A. sextet Las Cafeteras mixes Afro-Mexican rhythms with hip-hop, Spanglish pop, R&B, funk, punk and rock at the Rickshaw Theatre, with local guests San Pedro Cinco.

SATURDAY: David Lynch Night at the Lido is an evening of live soundtrack performances set to the (condensed) films of David Lynch, featuring Dirty Power (Dune), Songs from the Black Lodge (Twin Peaks), David P Smith (Eraserhead), Persephone Poison (Lost Highway), and Spectator 6 (Wild at Heart), with art installation by Joel DeStefano.

The Last Stop in Yuma County screens at the VIFF Centre

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: screenings at the VIFF Centre of director Francis Galluppi’s crime thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County, about a traveling knife salesman thrust into a high-stakes hostage situation at a middle-of-nowhere Arizona rest stop.
