
James “Super Chikan” Johnson plays the Rio

MONDAY AND THURSDAY: screenings at the VIFF Centre of director Francis Galluppi’s crime thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County, about a traveling knife salesman thrust into a high-stakes hostage situation at a middle-of-nowhere Arizona rest stop.
MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: True Tribal: Contemporary Expressions of Ancestral Tattoo Practices explores 30-plus years of Indigenous tattooing from around the world and showcases the artists who are reconnecting with traditional skin-marking practices, at the Museum of Vancouver.
WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: through videos, photographs, testimonies, song lyrics, and reflections, the exhibition Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot’s Russia offers an account of infamous feminist art collective Pussy Riot’s non-violent actions, running until June 2 at the Polygon Gallery.

The Oilers are in town
THURSDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Edmonton Oilers in the second round of the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup Playoffs at Rogers Arena.
THURSDAY: Southern California punk-rock trio Agent Orange plays the Cobalt, with local guests Big John Bates. SOLD OUT.
FRIDAY: Vancouver instrumental surf-rock trio the Reviberators–composed of guitarist Noah Walker, bassist Gillian Moranz, and drummer Jodie Ponto–plays Guilt & Co.

Mad Max screens at the Rio
FRIDAY: late-night 45th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic action flick Mad Max, starring Mel Gibson as a vengeful cop who launches a personal vendetta against a ruthless motorcycle gang.
FRIDAY: Houston ska-punk band Escape From the Zoo plays the Cobalt, with guests the Palmer Squares and Terminal City Rats.
FRIDAY: Mississippi blues artist and guitar maker James “Super Chikan” Johnson performs with the Mojo Stars at the Rio Theatre after a screening of the new documentary about him. Here’s my interview with “Super Chikan” from 2010.

Xavier Rudd plays Malkin Bowl
