FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Anti-Icon: Apokalypsis is an exhibition of 17 self-portraits by photographer Martine Gutierrez, running until September 29 at the Polygon Gallery.

Ring of Fire ends at Granville Island Stage

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the iconic songbook of Johnny Cash is featured in Ring of Fire, a theatrical concert created by Richard Maltby, Jr. that delves into the heart of Cash’s music, running until August 11 at the Arts Club Theatre’s Granville Island Stage.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: True Tribal: Contemporary Expressions of Ancestral Tattoo Practices explores 30-plus years of Indigenous tattooing from around the world and showcases the artists who are reconnecting with traditional skin-marking practices, at the Museum of Vancouver.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Playland features midway games, attractions like the Haunted Mansion and Sweet Escape Mini Golf, food options, and numerous rides, including the newly launched rollercoaster, ThunderVolt. Playland runs until August 16 on the PNE Grounds, then becomes part of admission to the PNE Fair.

Burnaby Blues Fest at Deer Lake Park

SATURDAY: the Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival features FREE performances by Mavis Staples, Calexico, the Suffers, Crystal Shawanda, and the della kit at Deer Lake Park.

SATURDAY: the Summerlight Music Festival features FREE performances by Actors, Haleluya Hailu, the Golden Age of Wrestling, Emmett Jerome, Girly, des hume, Freeze the Fall, Toddy, Aiko Tomi, Post Modern Connection, Francis Baptiste, Waash, Matias Roden, and Avey at MakerLabs.

SATURDAY: Calgary horror-rock trio Forbidden Dimension plays LanaLou’s, with guests Random Killing, Hung Up, and the Furniture. Here’s my interview with Forbidden Dimension guitarist-vocalist Jackson Phibes (aka illustrator Tom Bagley) from 1995.

SATURDAY: Theatre Under the Stars presents a performance in Stanley Park of the musical School of Rock, based on the 2003 Jack Black movie, with pre-show performances from School of Rock Vancouver.
