MONDAY: screening at the Rio Theatre of Pan’s Labyrinth, director Guillermo Del Toro’s phantasmagorical 2007 film about the young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer who escapes into an eerie but captivating fantasy world.

MONDAY TO FRIDAY: True Tribal: Contemporary Expressions of Ancestral Tattoo Practices explores 30-plus years of Indigenous tattooing from around the world and showcases the artists who are reconnecting with traditional skin-marking practices, at the Museum of Vancouver.

George Thorogood plays the Commodore

TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY: American blues-rockers  George Thorogood and the Destroyers (“Bad to the Bone”) play the Commodore Ballroom, with guest Joe Waters. Here’s my interview with George Thorogood from 2014.

TUESDAY & THURSDAY: Theatre Under the Stars presents a performance in Stanley Park of the musical School of Rock, based on the 2003 Jack Black movie, with pre-show performances from School of Rock Vancouver.

TUESDAY TO FRIDAY: the iconic songbook of Johnny Cash is featured in Ring of Fire, a theatrical concert created by Richard Maltby, Jr. that delves into the heart of Cash’s music, held over until August 25 at the Arts Club Theatre’s Granville Island Stage.

TUESDAY TO FRIDAY: the 2024 PNE Fair runs until September 2, featuring numerous exhibits, attractions, and entertainment, including the SuperDogs, Dueling Pianosagriculture displays, drag show, cooking demonstrations, musical performances, and rides such as the newly launched rollercoaster, ThunderVolt. Note: closed August 19 and 26.

The Aristocrats play the Hollywood

WEDNESDAY: instrumental rock trio The Aristocrats, composed of guitarist Guthrie Govan, bassist Bryan Beller, and drummer Marco Minnemann, plays the Hollywood Theatre. Here’s my interview with Guthrie Govan from 2015.
