
Event Horizon screens at the Rio

MONDAY TO FRIDAY: Emily Carr: A Room of Her Own, running until January 2025 at the Vancouver Art Gallery, features approximately 25 works drawn from the Gallery’s Emily Carr Collection, the most comprehensive holdings of her work in the world.
TUESDAY: British folk-punk band Frank Turner & the Sleeping Souls plays the Commodore Ballroom, with guests Bedouin Soundclash and Bridge City Sinners.
TUESDAY TO FRIDAY: the Vancouver Canadians take on the Eugene Emeralds in Minor League Baseball action at Nat Bailey Stadium.

Marcus King plays the Orpheum
WEDNESDAY: Southern blues-rock and Americana singer-songwriter and guitarist from South Carolina, Marcus King, performs tunes from his latest album Young Blood at the Orpheum Theatre.
WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: Anti-Icon: Apokalypsis is an exhibition of 17 self-portraits by photographer Martine Gutierrez, running until September 29 at the Polygon Gallery.
THURSDAY: members of Vancouver bands Bend Sinister, Five Alarm Funk, and Cobra Ramone perform David Bowie’s final studio album, Blackstar, in its entirety at the Rickshaw Theatre.

Used book sale at the VPL
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY: Friends of the VPL present a used book sale at the Vancouver Public Library, featuring hardcovers for $3 and softcovers for $2, plus CDs and DVDs. Please bring your own bag.
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY: the Arts Club Theatre presents performances at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage of Jersey Boys, a musical that tells the story of New Jersey hitmakers Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
FRIDAY: late-night screening at the Rio Theatre of director Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1997 cult sci-fi/horror flick Event Horizon, about a a group of astronauts sent to investigate and salvage a starship that disappeared on its maiden voyage. Here’s my original rave review from 1997.
