
Incendies screens at the Rio

MONDAY: screening at the Rio Theatre of The Doors: The Final Cut, director Oliver Stone‘s 2019 4K restoration of his 1991 biopic The Doors, starring the late Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison.
MONDAY TO FRIDAY: The Art of Banksy: “Without Limits” exhibition, running until May 25 at 1 Alexander Street, features over 200 prints, photos, sculptures, installations, and murals by world-famous street artist Banksy.

Pussy Riot plays the Pearl
TUESDAY: Russian feminist protest and performance art group Pussy Riot performs a multi-media show as part of its Riot Day Tour at the Pearl, with guest Margo.
TUESDAY: American hard-rock bands Steel Panther and Buckcherry perform at the Great Canadian Casino Vancouver as part of their Northern Exposure Tour, with guest Kurt Deimer.
WEDNESDAY: free National Canadian Film Day screening at the Rio Theatre of Incendies, director Denis Villeneuve’s 2010 drama about twins who journey to the Middle East to discover their family history and fulfill their mother’s last wishes.

The Golden Knights are in town
WEDNESDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Vegas Golden Knights in the final game of their 2024-25 National Hockey League season at Rogers Arena.
THURSDAY: DOXA’s programming team discusses the themes and films to watch for at this year’s Documentary Film Festival at a Spring Fundraiser at Vancouver Film School. All proceeds from the evening help DOXA continue to bring nonfiction cinema to audiences across Vancouver.
FRIDAY: as part of the Verses Festival of Words 2025, Mashed Poetics presents 12 local poets performing all 12 songs from the Tragically Hip’s 1992 album Fully Completely at Chill X Studio.

Coco Montoya plays the Rickshaw
FRIDAY: American blues guitarist Coco Montoya, former member of John Mayall‘s Bluesbreakers and the Albert Collins Band, plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with local guest Robert Connely Farr. Here’s my interview with Coco Montoya from 2003 and my interview with Robert Connely Farr from 2021.
FRIDAY: screening at the VIFF Centre of No Other Land, the Oscar-winning documentary about the realities of Israeli occupation in the State of Palestine’s West Bank. In Arabic, Hebrew, and English, with English subtitles.
