Inglorious Basterds screens at the Rio

FRIDAY: screening at the Cinematheque of Pulse director Kurosawa Kiyoshi’s 2924 revenge thriller Cloud, about an online reseller who preys upon the desires of his unseen market until a group of users notice the pattern of his grift.

FRIDAY: Vancouver-based soul vocalist Krystle Dos Santos and a seven-piece band perform the songs of Sade at Guilt and Co. Here’s my interview with Krystle Dos Santos from 2021.

FRIDAY: A Night of Blue at Green Auto features performances by Vancouver alt-rockers Bluestem and Regina indie-rockers Blu Beach Band, with guest Avery Sloan.

Make Me Famous screens at the VIFF Centre

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: screenings at the VIFF Centre of Make Me Famous, director Brian Vincent’s documentary about New York City’s East Village art scene of the late ’70s and early ’80s and the work of painter Edward Brezinski.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: the Arts Club Theatre Company presents the final performances at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage of the musical comedy Waitress, about a small-town waitress and expert pie-maker who dreams of a new life outside of her tumultuous marriage.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAYPlayland features midway games, mini-golf, a climbing wall, haunted mansion, food concessions, and over 35 rides and attractions, including the iconic wooden rollercoaster. Playland runs until August 15 on the PNE Grounds, then becomes part of admission to the PNE Fair.

Star Witnesses runs at the Polygon Gallery

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Star Witnesses, running at the Polygon Gallery until September 28, assembles works by 11 artists whose observations of the cosmos bring new understandings of exploratory and migratory movements on Planet Earth.

SATURDAY: late-night screening at the Rio Theatre of writer-director Quentin Tarantino‘s 2009 war film Inglorious Basterds, about a group of Jewish-American soldiers chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by brutally killing Nazis.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: the Powell Street Festival in Oppenheimer Park and the surrounding area is a celebration of Japanese-Canadian art and culture featuring music, dance, film and video, visual arts, martial arts, children’s activities, craft vendors, and Japanese food.

The Pride Parade happens downtown

SUNDAY: the 2025 Vancouver Pride Parade, which celebrates 2SLGBTQIA+ communities and commemorates the 20th anniversary of marriage equality in Canada, kicks off at Concord Pacific Place, travels along Pacific Avenue, and culminates at the intersection of Pacific and Burrard.
