
It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley screens at VIFF Centre

MONDAY: Grammy-winning blues legend from the States, Taj Mahal, plays the Vogue Theatre. Here’s my interview with Taj Mahal from 2011.
MONDAY: Vancouver sextet Petunia & the Vipers combines elements of country, western swing, Mexicana, French cabaret, ragtime, rockabilly, jazz, punk, and folk at the Princeton Pub & Grill.
MONDAY: 40th anniversary screening at the Rio Theatre of Come and See, Soviet director Elem Klimov’s harrowing plunge into the dehumanizing horrors of war.

Playland is open on the PNE Grounds
WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: Playland features midway games, mini-golf, a climbing wall, haunted mansion, food concessions, and over 35 rides and attractions, including the iconic wooden rollercoaster. Playland runs until August 15 on the PNE Grounds, then becomes part of admission to the PNE Fair.
WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: Star Witnesses, running at the Polygon Gallery until September 28, assembles works by 11 artists whose observations of the cosmos bring new understandings of exploratory and migratory movements on Planet Earth.
FRIDAY Benefit for Goldie at the Waldorf is a fundraiser to help support a local child with a rare genetic disorder, featuring performances by Kill Matilda, the Judys, Dusty Pines, and Vulture at Dawn.

Spider X plays Guilt and Co.
FRIDAY: the Spider X instrumental trio–composed of bassist Spider, guitarist Davis Yates, and drummer Aybars Savat–performs funkified versions of popular tunes at Guilt and Co.
FRIDAY: opening day of Ribfest Langley, a three-day, family-oriented event at McLeod Athletic Park featuring live music, kids’ activities, and six vendors of barbecued ribs. Performers on Friday include tributes to Elvis Presley (Steve Elliot), the Tragically Hip (Gift Shop), and Fleetwood Mac (Fleetwood Magic).
FRIDAY: screening at the VIFF Centre of director Amy Berg‘s new music documentary It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, about the American singer-songwriter who died tragically at the age of 30 after recording one highly acclaimed album.

Ozzy/Sabbath tribute at the WISE Hall
FRIDAY: Van Sabbath is a tribute to the music of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath at the WISE Hall featuring Brass Camel and friends, with guests Space Queen. Here’s my interview with Ozzy Osbourne from 1982 and my interview with Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath from 1984.
