That time Brian Bell told me that Rivers Cuomo didn’t think “Island in the Sun” was a Weezer song

I interviewed Weezer guitarist Brian Bell in April of 2002, shortly before the release of the American “geek-rock” band’s fourth album, Maladroit.

That was the followup to the previous year’s Ric Ocasek-produced, platinum-selling Green Album, which included the stick-in-your-head hit single “Island in the Sun”.

At one point in the conversation I asked Bell if he was there when Weezer’s main songwriter, Rivers Cuomo, came up with that tune’s catchy chord progression.
