That time good guys Craig Northey and Murray Atkinson of Odds performed an impromptu song for my 10-year-old daughter

By Steve Newton

Back in July of 2008 I met Odds singer-guitarist Craig Northey at an East Vancouver practice space to interview him about his band’s new album, Cheerleader.

After an eight-year hiatus Northey, bassist Doug Elliott, and drummer Pat Steward had gotten back together, recruited new guitarist Murray Atkinson, and renamed themselves the New Odds.

I’ve interviewed Northey five or six times over the years, and he’s honestly one of the nicest and funniest musicians you could ever meet. I mean, he was so kind that, when I asked if he’d sing a couple of lines from the new CD’s “My Happy Place” for my 10-year-old daughter Tess–who just loves that joyful closing theme from TV’s Corner Gas–he performed the whole damn song for her.

Atkinson contributed backing vocals, and, since he wasn’t plugged in, did a masterful job of singing his guitar solo.
