Very sorry to hear that Tim Curry passed away at his home in L.A. yesterday at the age of 80.
The British actor is best known for his outrageous role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 1975 musical-comedy The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but he holds a special place in the hearts of horror fans for his portrayal of the child-killing clown Pennywise in the 1990 TV adaptation of Stephen King’s widely acclaimed 1986 novel, It.
While that two-part “miniseries” was being filmed in Vancouver, I visited the Stanley Park set on assignment for New York’s Fangoria magazine and interviewed Curry on his lunch break. I vividly recall him munching on small sandwiches in full evil-clown mode, with makeup-FX artist Bart Mixon standing by to add comments here and there and dab at Curry’s face now and then.
Apparently Fangoria was the only publication given access to Curry at the time, because no other journalists got to meet him on the set and get the scoop.
So in recognition of Tim Curry’s unforgettable role as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, here’s the complete 21-minute audio of our conversation, posted for the very first time.
Feel free to chuckle at how I goofily messed up the intro by calling his character “Pennywhistle”.
