Guns N’ Roses play BC Place

MONDAY: American East Coast hip-hop acts Wu-Tang Clan and Nas perform at Rogers Arena as part of the N.Y. State of Mind Tour 2023, with guests De La Soul. There will be weed.

MONDAY: New York experimental jazz-funk trio Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog–featuring guitarist Ribot, bassist-keyboardist Shahzad Ismaily, and drummer Ches Smith–plays the BlueShore Financial Centre for the Arts at Capilano University.

MONDAY: L.A. hard-rock greats Guns N’ Roses, featuring singer Axl Rose and guitarist Slash, play BC Place, with guests Alice in Chains. Here’s my interviews with GN’R guitarist Slash from 1994 and Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell from 1991.

Joan Baez: I Am a Noise screens at VIFF Centre

MONDAY & WEDNESDAY TO THURSDAY: screenings at the VIFF Centre of the new documentary Joan Baez: I Am a Noise, about the legendary American folk singer and political activist.

TUESDAY: the City of Delta presents a screening of director Wes Craven’s classic 1984 horror flick A Nightmare on Elm Street at the North Delta Centre for the Arts. $5 tickets include popcorn.

THURSDAY: screening at the Cinematheque of director David Lynch’s acclaimed 1980 drama The Elephant Man, starring John Hurt as the severely deformed Joseph “John” Merrick.

Bouncing Souls play the Rickshaw

THURSDAY: New Jersey punk-rock quartet the Bouncing Souls plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Bad Cop Bad Cop, Catbite, and Urethane. SOLD OUT. Snooze ya lose.

THURSDAY: Canadian folk-rock quintet Great Lake Swimmers plays the Biltmore Cabaret as part of its Uncertain Country Tour, with guest Abigail Lapell.

THURSDAY: American country-rockers the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band play the Centre in Vancouver.

Terminal Station plays Frankie’s Jazz

THURSDAY: Vancouver blues-rock quartet Terminal Station–composed of singer-guitarist Scott Smith, keyboardist Darryl Havers, bassist Jeremy Holmes, and drummer Liam MacDonald–plays Frankie’s Jazz. Here’s my interview with Scott from 2020.

FRIDAY: opening day of the Vancouver Writers Fest features an evening with Scotiabank Giller Prize finalists Sarah Bernstein, Eleanor Catton, Kevin Chong, Dionne Irving, and CS Richardson at the Vancouver Playhouse.

FRIDAY: Vancouver blues legend and actor Jim Byrnes plays the Bez Arts Hub in Langley, accompanied by pianist Simon Kendall from Doug and the Slugs. Here’s my interview with Jim from 1985.

FRIDAY: the BC Lions take on the Calgary Stampeders in Canadian Football League action at BC Place.

FRIDAY: the Rogue Folk Club presents Vancouver acoustic folk-roots quartet the Fugitives performing tunes from its new album No Help Coming at Mel Lehan Hall at St. James.
