FRIDAY: legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma joins conductor Otto Tausk and the Vancouver Symphony at the Orpheum Theatre in a program that includes Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony, and Samy Moussa’s Adgilis Deda. Here’s my interview with Otto Tausk from 2021.
FRIDAY: Storytellers for Justice present a staged reading at Notional Space of My Name is Rachel Corrie, with all proceeds to Universal Limbs, a charity providing prosthetics to amputees from Gaza.

Dark Side at the Dome
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: showing nightly until April 29 at the Dome, Pink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon is an immersive, 42-minute, 360° surround-sound journey through deep space, alien worlds, and celestial landscapes, featuring the mindblowing music from the legendary prog-rock band’s 1973 album.
FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: That Green Ideal: Emily Carr and the Idea of Nature, running until November 8 at the Vancouver Art Gallery, features more than 100 works by the iconic B.C. artist, exploring in-depth her obsession with the landscape of the Pacific Northwest.
SATURDAY: the Vancouver Goldeneyes take on the Minnesota Frost in Professional Women’s Hockey League action at the Pacific Coliseum.

Don Alder performs at Surrey Civic Plaza
SATURDAY: the annual Party for the Planet at Surrey Civic Plaza features food trucks, plant sales, kids’ activities, sustainable marketplace, and musical performances by R&B artist Emma Alves, alt-pop singer Ahshï, folk act Isabella and the Sprouts, and acoustic guitarist Don Alder. SATURDAY: The Homeless Project at VIFF Centre is the third in guitarist-composer Tony Wilson’s series of projects addressing social issues, combining music, text, still photography, and film to shine a sympathetic light on Canada’s urban dispossessed.
