FRIDAY: Vancouver power-metal band Iron Kingdom performs tunes from new album Shadows and Dust at the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests W.M.D.Torrefy, and Hyperstrike.

FRIDAY & SATURDAY: conductor Sean O’Loughlin leads the Vancouver Symphony in Kings of Soul, a program of music by Marvin Gaye, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Otis Redding, the Temptations, Al Green, Barry White, Smokey Robinson, and Curtis Mayfield at the Orpheum Theatre.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: Come From Away, Irene Sankoff and David Hein’s musical inspired by the true events of September 11, when 7,000 stranded airplane passengers were welcomed by the residents of Gander, Newfoundland, runs until July 26 at the Arts Club Theatre Company’s Stanley BFL Canada Stage.

Dark Side at the Dome

FRIDAY TO SUNDAY: showing nightly until June 30 at the DomePink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon is an immersive, 42-minute, 360° surround-sound journey through deep space, alien worlds, and celestial landscapes, featuring the mindblowing music from the legendary prog-rock band’s 1973 album.

FRIDAY TO SUNDAYThat Green Ideal: Emily Carr and the Idea of Nature, running until November 8 at the Vancouver Art Gallery, features more than 100 works by the iconic B.C. artist, exploring in-depth her obsession with the landscape of the Pacific Northwest.

SATURDAY: Australian rock band the Church, featuring singer-bassist Steve Kilbey, plays the Vogue Theatre. Here’s my interview with Steve Kilbey from 1990.

Tony Wilson plays Tyrant Studios

SATURDAY: Vancouver guitarist Tony Wilson presents his new project Another Way to Say Hello–featuring cellist Peggy Lee, saxophonist Dominic Conway, bassist Karlis Silins, and drummer Jesus Caballero–at Tyrant Studios.

SATURDAY: Canadian pop-rock supergroup Trans-Canada Highwaymen–composed of Craig Northey (Odds, Stripper’s Union), Moe Berg (the Pursuit of Happiness), Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies), and Chris Murphy (Sloan)–plays the Commodore Ballroom. Here’s some of my interviews with NortheyBerg, and Page.

SUNDAY: Canadian comedian and actor Jon Dore performs an evening of standup at the Underground Comedy Club.

Trainspotting screens at the Park

SUNDAY: 30th anniversary screening at the Park Theatre of a 4K restoration of Trainspotting, director Danny Boyle’s black-comedy/drama about a group of heroin addicts in an economically depressed area of Edinburgh, Scotland.
