MONDAY & WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: the work of late Trinidadian-Canadian artist Denyse Thomasos is featured in the career retrospective Denyse Thomasos: just beyond, running until March of 2024 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

MONDAY TO FRIDAY: 31 emerging and seasoned local designers and makers were selected to create 22 objects made from vintage mahogany for Reclaim + Repair: The Mahogany Project, running until August 7 at the Museum of Vancouver.

MONDAY TO FRIDAY: running until January 21, Canyon Lights features a dazzling Christmas-light display on the trees, bridges, and pathways of North Vancouver’s Capilano Suspension Bridge Park.

Soulstream plays the Fox Cabaret

WEDNESDAY: 10-piece Vancouver funk, soul, and jazz band Soulstream performs a reunion show to celebrate drummer Randall Stoll’s 60th birthday at the Fox Cabaret.

FRIDAY: Boston guitarist Johnny A, former touring member of the Yardbirds, performs instrumental rock, jazz, and blues at Blue Frog Studios.

FRIDAY: screening at the Cinematheque of French director Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 feature debut, Breathless, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg. In French with English subtitles.

Blues Hoodoo plays Frankie’s Jazz

FRIDAY: jazz-funk quintet Blues Hoodoo –composed of guitarist Konrad Breuers, saxophonist Ian Putz, keyboardist Stuart “Stubop” Young, bassist Shawn Stewart, and drummer Ron Wells–performs original tunes and covers of Chick Corea, Jeff Beck, Jaco Pastorius, and Herbie Hancock at Frankie’s Jazz.

FRIDAY: the Vancouver Symphony performs David Arnold’s score during a screening of the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale at the Orpheum Theatre. 170-minute performance with one intermission.

FRIDAY: Vancouver metal band 3 Inches of Blood, featuring vocalist Cam Pipes, plays the first of three nights at the Commodore Ballroom. SOLD OUT. Here’s my interview with Cam Pipes from 2009.

FRIDAY: the first concert of Early Music Vancouver‘s three-day Lumen Festival features Canadian-American cellist Elinor Frey performing Bach’s Cello Suites No.’s 1, 2 & 6 at the Vancouver Playhouse. (This is a replacement concert for The Luminous Hour with Reginald Mobley & the PBO, which was cancelled due to illness.)
