Yesterday the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted 16 artists for its class of 2024, but none of them were named Johnny Winter or Rory Gallagher. Or even J.J. Cale, for that matter.
The braindead twats at the Rock Hall seem to believe that acts like Cher, Kool & the Gang, and Dionne Warwick are the epitome of rock ‘n’ roll, more so than those three guitar-slinging legends.
Can you freakin’ believe it?
Not all of yesterday’s inductees were laughable, I’ll admit. The RRHOF did save face somewhat by installing the likes of Peter Frampton, the MC5, and John Mayall, and to a lesser degree Ozzy Osbourne and Foreigner. But I still maintain that Johnny, Rory, and J.J. are more worthy of tribute than any of them.
As you may be aware, having been gobsmacked by the sheer number of deserving rock musicians who’ve been constantly snubbed by the official RRHOF, I opened up my own institution, Newt’s Rock Hall, in 2015. Since then I’ve been inducting artists that have not yet been chosen for the other Rock Hall in Cleveland, to basically just point out how lame it is while showing some love for my fave overlooked rockers.
Since the official Rock Hall has just announced eight inductees in its Performance Category, Newt’s Rock Hall is countering with eight of its own. Keeping in mind that only artists not already in the official Rock and Roll Hall of Fame can be chosen, the inductees for Newt’s Rock Hall, Class of 2024 are:
Scorpions, Midnight Oil, the Shadows, Alice in Chains, the Black Crowes, Ronnie James Dio, Danny Gatton, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
Since one of the official Rock Hall’s 2024 inductees, the MC5, was already in Newt’s Rock Hall (class of 2018), and there can be no overlap, I have chosen J.J. Cale to replace them. (I really should have inducted J.J. into Newt’s Rock Hall years ago; I’m embarassed that it’s taken me so long. That’s the type of outrageous oversight I’ve come to expect from Jann Wenner and the twits over at the RRHOF, not from myself. I aim to do better.)
Anyway, for those who haven’t been keeping track, here’s the full list of previous inductees into Newt’s Rock Hall. It’s pretty shocking that none of these folks are in the official Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, eh?
Class of 2023: Soundgarden, the Guess Who, the Replacements, Bad Company, the Edgar Winter Group, Mahogany Rush, and the Stray Cats.
(Please note: due to health concerns my Hall was shuttered during the pandemic, so there were no Classes of 2021 and 2022.
Class of 2020: Rainbow, BTO, Steve Earle, Mahogany Rush, Little Feat, Boston (replacing Judas Priest, who were finally inducted into the RRHOF in 2022), and Badfinger (replacing Todd Rundgren, finally inducted into the RRHOF in 2021).
